Transforming Spaces with Large-Scale Paper Flowers: A Collaboration with East Olivia for Mixed By Nasrin

Transforming Spaces with Large-Scale Paper Flowers: A Collaboration with East Olivia for Mixed By Nasrin

Large-scale paper flowers bring a bold and artistic touch to event spaces, making them perfect for event design decor and brand installation decor in NYC. For Mixed By Nasrin’s Spring Collection launch, I collaborated with East Olivia to create a custom paper flower backdrop featuring giant Cymbidium and Moth Orchids.

Crafted from laminated crepe paper and hand-painted for a lifelike effect, these oversized blooms became a stunning focal point, enhancing the brand’s aesthetic and creating a share-worthy moment for guests.

In March 2025, I had the incredible opportunity to create large-scale paper flowers in collaboration with East Olivia’s floral installation for Mixed By Nasrin’s Spring Collection launch in Brooklyn, New York. This project was an exciting challenge that pushed my creativity and technical skills, resulting in a custom paper flower backdrop that became a striking focal point of the event.

Designing Large-Scale Paper Flowers for Event Decor

The inspiration for these giant paper flowers came directly from one of Mixed By Nasrin’s signature spring patterns. The team chose to feature two types of orchids—Cymbidium and Moth Orchids—which, coincidentally, I had just updated my template for. It felt like perfect timing, as if the universe had aligned to prepare me for this exact moment.

Unlike traditional fresh flowers, custom paper flower installations require careful planning to ensure the right balance of artistry and durability. The challenge with large-scale floral pieces is that their construction differs significantly from that of standard-sized blooms. A regular Orchid and a giant Orchid require entirely different structural considerations, from material selection to engineering a framework that supports their expanded dimensions.

The Process: Crafting a Custom Paper Flower Backdrop

For this installation, I began by sketching out the flowers, carefully selecting the appropriate paperweight and paint to achieve a lifelike texture. Since orchids have delicate yet sculptural petals, I needed a material that was both flexible and sturdy enough to hold its shape on a large scale.

After testing different approaches, I decided to laminate 180-gram crepe paper to add strength while still maintaining a natural-looking petal curvature. Each petal was then hand-painted with acrylic, allowing for subtle variations in color that mimicked the organic beauty of real flowers. I let them dry overnight to ensure the paint wouldn’t warp the paper before assembling each component.

The first flower I completed was the blue Cymbidium Orchid, which took the most time due to its intricate petal structure. Once I was confident in the design and stability, I moved on to the pink Moth Orchid, which, while still detailed, proved to be a bit more straightforward in construction. Seeing both flowers come together was incredibly satisfying, and I loved how they reflected the vibrant yet sophisticated aesthetic of Mixed By Nasrin’s collection.

Elevating Event Design Decor with Large-Scale Paper Flowers

There’s something undeniably magical about large-scale paper flowers in an event setting. They instantly transform a space, drawing guests in and creating a sense of wonder. Whether used for event design decor, brand installation decor in NYC, or luxury event design, these oversized blooms serve multiple purposes beyond just looking beautiful.

  1. Captivating Visual Impact – Giant flowers command attention, making them perfect for stage designs, entryways, and statement installations. They become natural conversation starters, enhancing the overall event experience.

  2. Perfect for Social Media & Photography – A custom paper flower backdrop isn’t just decor—it’s an interactive element that encourages attendees to snap photos and share them online. In today’s digital-driven world, having a share-worthy installation can significantly amplify an event’s reach.

  3. Brand Storytelling & Customization – Unlike fresh flowers, paper blooms can be fully customized in terms of color, size, and style. This allows brands to align the floral elements with their visual identity, reinforcing brand recognition and creating a cohesive aesthetic.

  4. Sustainability & Long-Lasting Beauty – Paper flowers are an eco-friendly alternative to fresh florals, which often have a limited lifespan. They can be repurposed, stored, or even gifted as keepsakes, making them a sustainable choice for event design decor and brand installations.

Expanding into Large-Scale Floral Installations

This collaboration with East Olivia and Mixed By Nasrin was a pivotal moment for me. It opened up new possibilities and strengthened my confidence in creating more giant paper flowers for a variety of projects—whether for art installations, event activations, luxury brand experiences, or creative event decor.

Crafting these larger-than-life blooms is both a technical and artistic endeavor, one that I deeply enjoy. Each project presents new challenges, whether it’s engineering a flower to stand tall at an outdoor event, ensuring it remains lightweight enough for a ceiling installation, or matching a brand’s exact color palette. The innovation potential is endless, and I’m eager to explore more opportunities to bring these extraordinary floral creations to life.
